Rockingham Beach Cup and Rotary Community Festival

Transforming our coastline into a premier racing spectacle and a powerhouse for local philanthropy.

It is a sound unlike any other on the Western Australian coastline: the rhythmic, thunderous drumming of thoroughbred hooves striking wet sand, echoing perfectly against the gentle crash of the Indian Ocean. For a fleeting weekend, the serene foreshore of Cockburn Sound is magically transformed into a vibrant arena of speed and seaside elegance. This is the Rockingham Beach Cup—Western Australia’s only social beach horse racing event.

But the Cup is far more than just a horse race. It is a multifaceted narrative woven with threads of community resilience and a profound commitment to philanthropic service. As we welcome spectators back to the foreshore for the 2026 event, the Rockingham Beach Cup continues to embody the true, collaborative spirit of our remarkable community.

A Vision Forged in Sand

Equine welfare remains the absolute priority, featuring magnificent retired track horses.

The modern Rockingham Beach Cup traces its roots back to 2016. The Rotary Club of Palm Beach recognised an extraordinary potential right on our doorstep. The vision was ambitious yet firmly grounded in civic pride: to re-establish a historical tradition of beach racing to reinvigorate the coastal strip, stimulate local commerce, and create a sustainable fundraising engine.

By combining the sheer thrill of equestrian athleticism and the relaxed culture of a day at the beach, the inaugural event proved extraordinary. Over the past decade, the event has navigated significant logistical challenges—including the major 2018 Rockingham Foreshore Revitalisation and the 2020 pandemic—with admirable agility.

Through every hurdle, the commitment of the Rotary Club of Palm Beach has remained steadfast. The event has continuously matured, shifting its focus firmly away from commercial wagering (which is strictly prohibited) toward fostering community engagement, celebrating equine welfare, and providing inclusive family entertainment.

Designing a Coastal Spectacle

Today, the Rockingham Beach Cup and Rotary Community Festival is a multifaceted celebration that seamlessly blends free, wide-open community access with premium hospitality enclosures.

The landward precinct centres around Churchill Park, hosting the free-entry Rotary Community Festival. Attracting over 26,000 people, the festival provides two days of free, inclusive, family-friendly entertainment. It is the perfect opportunity for locals and visitors to connect and rediscover Rockingham. Attendees can enjoy live music, explore bespoke artisan market stalls, sample gourmet food trucks, and participate in interactive family zones.

"It is a spectacle that briefly suspends reality, transforming the serene coastline into a vibrant arena of speed, power, and undeniable elegance."

For those seeking an elevated, unforgettable experience, the ticketed Palm Beach Oasis offers an exclusive, luxurious enclosure positioned right on the high-water line. Guests enjoy a coveted 'toes-in-the-sand' view of the finishing post. This premium vantage point is perfectly complemented by pop-up container bars serving crisp Western Australian wines, craft beers, and cocktails. Live DJ sets keep the energy high between races, while the glamorous and highly competitive Bra Town Fashion on the Foreshore competition adds a touch of trackside high fashion to the beach. Exciting charity auctions round out the Oasis experience, ensuring the atmosphere is electric—a perfectly balanced blend of relaxed coastal charm and palpable race-day excitement.

Jockeys riding thoroughbred horses on the beach near the water's edge

Exhibition racing aligns perfectly with the low tide for optimal track safety.

The main event, the undisputed drawcard, occurs on the Sunday. An 800-metre fenced straight track is meticulously prepared on the wet, firm beach sand. The timing of the event is a marvel of logistical planning, requiring perfect alignment with the low tide of the Indian Ocean to ensure optimal, safe, and stable running conditions for the animals. Four thrilling exhibition races are held throughout the afternoon, featuring magnificent, retired track horses sourced specifically through highly experienced and carefully vetted trainers.

The Rotary Club places the absolute highest priority on animal welfare, and this ethos is strictly enforced across every single facet of the event. To emphasise that this is a community celebration rather than a gambling enterprise, there is absolutely no betting or wagering permitted on the outcomes of these races. Furthermore, professional jockeys carry whips strictly for safety, balance, and steering—they are never, under any circumstances, used for encouragement or punishment. Comprehensive, rigorous veterinary checks are conducted before the horses arrive, upon arrival, and constantly during the event.

The sight of these majestic, powerful athletes thundering down the pristine sand, their coats gleaming in the afternoon sun, followed immediately by a well-deserved, cooling post-race splash in the ocean shallows as the massive crowd cheers, is the defining, unforgettable image of the Rockingham Beach Cup. It is a genuine celebration of the animal, beautifully showcasing their versatility and grace post-racing, just as much as it is a celebration of the sport itself.

A Powerhouse for Philanthropy

The true heart of the event lies in its profound socio-economic impact, generating an estimated $1.1 million in direct and indirect output to boost our local economy before the peak summer season.

Most significantly, the event is made possible by the 1,000s of hours of voluntary work dedicated by the RBC Committee, Rotarians, community members, and the horse industry. Thanks to this tireless commitment, 100% of net proceeds are directed straight back into non-profit organisations and vital community health programmes.

Where the Funds Go: Empowering Our Beneficiaries

The substantial capital raised by the community's enthusiastic support of the Rockingham Beach Cup directly funds several crucial, life-changing causes across Western Australia:

Medical Research & Diagnostics

As detailed in the Australian Alzheimer's Research Foundation 2021 Annual Report_5, funds raised provide critical support for groundbreaking scientific research into medical diagnostics, early interventions, and potential treatments for this devastating disease.

Variety – The Children's Charity WA

Providing hope and practical help by funding specialised mobility aids, dedicated educational assistance, and critical medical support programmes for Western Australian youth who are sick, disadvantaged, or living with a disability.

MSWA (Multiple Sclerosis WA)

Enabling the expansion of vital outreach services, specialised neurological nursing care, and comprehensive allied health support for individuals and families living with complex neurological conditions in our state.

Local Rotary Community Initiatives

Directly funding highly localised, impactful civic projects within our own backyard. These diverse projects range from constructing calming sensory rooms for local educational support centres to the innovative design and installation of specialised artificial nesting boxes to protect the vulnerable Little Penguin population on nearby Penguin Island.

The Essential Power of Partnership

An event of this magnitude is simply impossible to execute in isolation. Recognised proudly as the Tourism Council Silver Award 2022 winner, the event relies on a masterclass in collaborative governance and robust partnerships across multiple sectors.

At the foundation is the vital backing of the City of Rockingham Council. Through its Iconic Event Sponsorship, the Council provides essential grant funding alongside indispensable municipal services. We are also incredibly grateful to Lotterywest Grants, a major event contributor whose crucial backing provides the broader financial stability needed to elevate this local gathering into a premier Western Australian destination event.

Equally critical is the passionate support from our local business community, including Title Sponsor Cerámico Tiles & Bathrooms and Presenting Sponsor Sound Tax & Accounting. Furthermore, Racing WA and the Off the Track WA initiative play indispensable roles in managing complex equine logistics and ensuring best-in-class animal welfare compliance.

As the Rotary Club of Palm Beach looks brightly toward the future, we celebrate not just the exhilarating thrill of the race, but the triumphant, enduring spirit of a community that comes together—government, business, and selfless volunteers—to build something truly iconic upon our sands.
